Putin sends special message to President of Uganda

Moscow, 10 October 2022 (TDI): The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, sent a special independence day message to the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, on the occasion of the independence day of Uganda on 9 October.

Message by Putin

Vladimir Putin said “Dear Mr. President, please accept congratulations on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the declaration of Independence of your country. Russian-Ugandan relations have been traditionally friendly.

” He also wished the President of Uganda good health.

Putin said that he was confident that further development of constructive bilateral cooperation in different areas would meet the fundamental interests of the people of both countries and would be in line with consolidating stability and security on the African continent.

The President of Russia also said, “Russia’s relations with Uganda, one of Russia’s reliable partners in Africa, are friendly and mutually beneficial.”

Moreover, Putin said, “I am positive that our ties in the political, trade, and economic fields will continue to thrive, including in new promising areas.”

Bilateral Relations

Russia established diplomatic relations with Uganda in October 1962. Russia has an embassy in Kampala, and Uganda has an embassy in Moscow.

In 1964, the two countries signed a trade agreement and an agreement on economic and technical cooperation.

They registered dynamic political dialogue, which provided for a loan of 14 million rubles to Uganda.

The Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, also had a brief conversation with Russian President, Vladimir Putin. Both Presidents met at Sea Island during the summit of the G8 in 2004.

Moreover, Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrey Denisov, visited Kampala in 2008.  He signed a Memorandum of Consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of both countries during that visit.

A group of observers from the Russian Central Election Commission also worked in the general elections in Uganda in February 2011.
