Moscow/Baku, 29 August 2024 (TDI): Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Wednesday over the telephone. Both leaders discussed the ongoing Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process.
The call followed Putin’s recent visit to Baku, where he reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to supporting peace negotiations. During the visit, both leaders held detailed discussions about the Azerbaijan-Russia bilateral relationship and broader regional context.
Key Issues Discussed
The Kremlin reported that both leaders discussed key issues in the South Caucasus. The main issue discussed during the call was negotiating an Armenian-Azerbaijani peace treaty. Putin reiterated Russia’s readiness to help both nations reach mutually acceptable solutions. In addition, they discussed border delimitation and reopening of transport links during the conversation.
Both leaders emphasized that implementing agreements from Putin’s Baku visit will strengthen Russia-Azerbaijan relations. It would deepen the “allied and collegial relations” between the two countries, the Kremlin readout said.

Putin’s Recent Diplomatic Efforts
On August 22, President Putin also held a telephone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. During the call, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s steadfast commitment to facilitating a peaceful resolution between Armenia and Azerbaijan. President Putin assured Prime Minister Pashinyan of Russia’s support for a peace deal between Azerbaijan and Armenia. In response, PM Pashinyan thanked Putin and agreed to meet him in person soon to discuss the Armenia-Russia bilateral agenda.
In recent days, President Putin has been actively involved in diplomacy, focusing on the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace deal. He also had a telephone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding Russia-India bilateral relations two days earlier. The call with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is also part of this ongoing diplomatic effort.
