PTA Launches 2nd Phase of Operation Against Illegal SIMs

ISLAMABAD 2 September 2024 (TDI): The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched the second phase of its operation against illegal SIMs, aimed at curbing the menace of fake and unauthorized mobile connections.

In this phase, PTA has started blocking SIMs that are registered against expired identity cards issued before 2017. The authority has urged citizens to renew their identity cards to avoid SIM blocking.

The operation is being carried out in collaboration with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), using data obtained from the authority to identify and block illegal SIMs. So far, PTA has blocked over 69,000 illegal SIMs since August 16.

PTA has warned that fake SIMs are being used in various illegal activities, including terrorism, financial fraud, and other crimes. To avoid inconvenience to legitimate users, PTA is sending awareness messages to users before blocking their SIMs.

In the next phase of the operation, PTA will block SIMs registered in the names of deceased individuals. According to PTA, the authority is committed to ensuring the integrity of the country’s telecommunications network and preventing its use for illegal activities.
