Prime Minister Trudeau addresses global challenges at G20 Summit

New Delhi, 11 September 2023 (TDI): On 10 September 2023, Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau on the last day of the G20 Summit in India addressed the global challenges & expressed his support for inclusivity and sustainable development.

He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to facilitate economic growth that is inclusive and beneficial for all.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister of Canada highlighted the pressing requirement for G20 member states to take proactive measures as the consequences of climate change intensify global issues related to food security, economic stability, and supply chains.

Additionally, he expressed his concerns for both G20 members and other countries that have experienced severe flooding and wildfires in recent months.

He also addressed the devastating effects of the wildfires that have damaged Canadian provinces and territories during the summer.

During the G20 Summit, Prime Minister Trudeau reiterated Canada’s strong commitment to the international rule-based order, and the global trade and economic advancements dependent on this order.

Moreover, he criticized Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine and further highlighted that to attain a global economic boost, sustainable development goals, and to preserve G20 effectiveness, it is crucial to unite against Russia’s unlawful war against Ukraine.

Additionally, the Prime Minister during the summit also declared that Canada will never acknowledge the results of Russia’s ongoing elections in Ukraine as they are deceptive and designed solely to legitimize military conquest while pretending to be democratic.

Prime Minister Trudeau also advocated for enhanced and more comprehensive multilateral organizations.

He expressed his support for the African Union’s (AU) addition to the G20 & emphasized the need for increased representation of developing states in International affairs.

In addition, the Canadian Prime Minister congratulated the Chairperson of the AU, Azali Assoumani for their role in promoting multilateralism and representing the interests of countries in the Global South.

Also, Justin Trudeau, along with the G20 leaders, issued a joint statement in which they collectively pledged to facilitate sustainable economic growth, efforts to modernize international financial institutions, promote digital modernization & ensure equitable rights for women.

He revealed Canada’s commitment in support of SDG which includes efforts to mitigate climate change effects, enhance food security, and empower women.

Partnering for Climate Program

Firstly, Canada will allocate funding up to $63 million for five new initiatives under the Partnering for Climate program.

These projects will focus on implementing nature-based solutions to aid climate change adaptation in Sub-Saharan Africa, safeguard and enhance biodiversity, and promote women’s empowerment.

Sustainable Development Agriculture in Bolivia

Furthermore, Canada will allocate $7.7 million to support the inclusive and sustainable development of agricultural value chains in Bolivia.

This funding aims to enhance the resilience of helpless indigenous communities amid climate change challenges and food security concerns.

Catalytic Climate Finance Facility

Additionally, Canada will provide $7 million to enhance the Catalytic Climate Finance Facility.

This initiative aims to strengthen Climate finance initiatives in developing nations and assist that targeting the climate change effects on the population, specifically women and children.

Nigerian Women-led Agriculture Companies

Canada will fund $15.7 million to support the expansion of agriculture enterprises led by Nigerian women.

Food Security in Congo

Canada will fund $15 million to enhance food security in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This funding aims to increase the income of women working in the agriculture sector.

School Nutrition Programs in Burkina Faso

Canada will allocate $22 million to enhance school nutrition programs in Burkina Faso. This funding aims to alleviate chronic food and nutrition challenges in the country and address the nutritional needs of the people, particularly girls.
