Kyiv, 17 November 2023 (TDI): New UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron made his first working visit to Ukraine on Thursday, meeting President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. The pair discussed weapons, arms production, and security in the Black Sea, Ukraine’s foreign ministry said.
Moreover, this unexpected meeting highlights the friendly relations between the UK and Ukraine. Albeit, Zelensky stated that the UK considered one of Ukraine’s strongest allies.
Cameron reiterated the UK’s support for Ukraine, promising moral, diplomatic and “above all military support however long it takes”. The UK has provided Ukraine with billions of pounds in military aid since Russia launched its invasion in February 2022.
Lord Cameron acknowledged former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s support for Ukraine, despite their disagreements on other matters.
During Cameron’s tenure as prime minister in 2014, Russia initiated its aggressive campaign against Ukraine, leading to the UK and its Western allies imposing sanctions on Russia and condemning Putin’s actions.
Despite the ongoing challenges, the meeting between Cameron and Zelensky described as warm and cordial. Cameron likely travelled to Poland before taking an overnight train to Kyiv for the meeting.
Unfortunately, no press conference was held, so journalists could not ask any questions. President Zelensky was likely listening for the word “continuation,” which he received in the form of continued support from the UK in terms of moral, economic, and military aid.
Furthermore, Lord Cameron assured that the UK would continue to provide military support, which may provide some comfort to Ukraine amidst ongoing political turmoil and uncertainty regarding support from other allies.

The assurance of continued support from the UK, particularly in terms of military aid, is likely to have a positive impact on Ukraine’s stability and provide a sense of security amidst the ongoing political turmoil.
