Tehran, 19 September 2022 (TDI): President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Sayyid Ebrahim Raisi left for New York on Monday. During his visit to New York, he will be attending the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The Government of Iran on their Twitter handle shared, “This visit is in line with the effort to materialize fair international order through economic multilateralism”.

UN General Assembly: An Overview
The United Nations General Assembly (UN) is the principal decision and policy-making organ of the UN. It comprises all the member states that are a part of the organization. Each of the 193 Member countries has a right to an equal vote in Assembly decisions.
UNGA provides a platform for states to discuss international issues mentioned in the Charter of the UN. In total, the Assembly has six committees.
These include Disarmament and International Security, Economic and Financial Committee, Social, Humanitarian & Cultural Issues, Special Political and Decolonization, Administrative and Budgetary Committee, and Committee for legal procedures, respectively.
In addition, the UNGA is also responsible for appointing the Secretary General of the Organization on the basis of recommendations by the UN Security Council (UNSC).
Apart from this, the General Assembly also elects the non-permanent members of the Security Council. Moreover, it has the right to make key decisions regarding the approval of the UN annual budget.
Every year, the UNGA members meet in regular sessions from September to December.
UNGA 77th Session
The 77th Session of UNGA was commenced on 13th September 2022 by the President of the Session, Csaba Kőrösi. The session is being held at UN Headquarters in New York.
Additionally, High-level debates will formally start on 20th September and last till 26th September.
During the meetings, the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious, and Linguistic Minorities also will be marked.
Along with the President of Iran, leaders from all the member states including Pakistan, the Republic of Turkiye, the United States, and Qatar are participating in the session.
