Paris/Tehran, 25 July 2022 (TDI): Emmanuel Macron, President of France, and Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, held a telephonic meeting on Saturday.

The Presidents held discussions on the Ukrainian war and its energy and food security impacts. Moreover, they also discussed the regional situation of the Middle East.

Emmanuel Macron recalled France’s attachment and commitment to the security and stability of the Middle Eastern Region. He assured France would continue the efforts to ease tensions in the region.

Apart from this, the leaders agreed to strengthen dialogue between the states of the Middle Eastern region.

The two Heads of State also discussed Iran’s nuclear agreement of 2015. The French President insisted that regarding the implementation of the nuclear program, the negotiated solution is still possible, and it must be done as soon as possible.

The French President expressed that progress on the nuclear program is not satisfactory. He insisted to his Iranian counterpart that he should make a clear choice regarding the conclusion of the nuclear agreement and return to fulfill nuclear commitments.

Furthermore, the President of France showed his concerns about the four French nationals detained in Iran. Two of them were detained in May 2022. Macron insisted on their immediate release.

France-Iran Relations

France and Iran have maintained good political relations since 2009. Concerning economic relations, France is the largest importer of oil from Iran. In 2016, it was ranked 13 among Iran’s suppliers in the world. France’s exports to Iran were estimated at around 31 EUR Million in April 2022.

Regarding educational cooperation, there are several French institutes in Iran, including the Institut Français de Recherche en Iran (IFR) and the French language center. They are managed under contract with the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE).

Moreover, the countries have also signed the Gundishapur Hubert Curien Partnership program to enhance scientific and academic cooperation for Iranian civil society.
