President Kazakhstan and European Council discuss Afghanistan

Brussels, 27 August 2021 (TDI): Charles Michel, President of the European Council had a telephonic conversation with the President of Kazakhstan, Kassim-Jomart Tokayev. Charles Michel claimed that the discussion was about the current situation of Afghanistan and its implications on the Central Asian region.

Moreover, the European Council President applauded the key role played by Kazakhstan in fighting terrorism, drug trafficking, and the prevention of irregular migrations. Kazakhstan is also playing an important role by promoting stability in the region.

He further stated that they exchanged views on the Afghan crisis. There should be a proper representation and government of Afghanistan due to which a Border Management Programme in Central Asia could be strengthened against terrorism and other illegal activities.

Charles Michel also thanked Kazakhstan for its efforts and assistance during the evacuation attempts in Afghanistan by hosting United Nations Assistance Mission (UNMA) staff in.
