Ankara, 1 December 2023 (TDI): President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to participate in the 28 meeting of the Conference of Parties, COP28 Friday.
According to a statement released by Turkey’s Communication Directorate, “At the summit, it is planned to exchange views at the leadership level on various issues such as environmental problems, energy, food and health, especially policies to combat climate change.”
Furthermore, on December 1, Erdogan will address the COP28 conference. He is also expected to hold talks with the heads of state and governments of some participating countries on the sidelines of the conference.
In an effort to maintain the 1.5 degree Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) global warming target outlined in the Paris Agreement, the United Arab Emirates is scheduled to host this year’s COP28 summit from November 30 to December 12.
Moreover, Turkey’s 2053 net zero emissions and green development ambitions place it among the nations making significant contributions to the Paris Climate Agreement. Ankara is working on several projects, like as a zero-waste project, to make Turkey cleaner and more environmentally friendly.
In 2017, under the patronage of first lady Emine Erdogan, Turkey launched the zero-waste project to highlight the importance of eliminating waste in fighting the climate crisis.
The project has drawn worldwide recognition, with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressing his gratitude to the First Lady for the initiative in New York last September during a conference.

In addition to that, March 30 was designated as the International Day of Zero Waste after a resolution on Turkey’s zero waste effort was unanimously approved by the UN General Assembly in December of last year.
Erdogan is joined by the first lady, Mehmet Özhaseki, the minister of environment, urban planning, and climate change; Abdülkadir Uraloğlu, the minister of transportation and infrastructure; Fahrettin Altun, the director of communications; and Akif Çağatay Kılıç, the senior presidential adviser for COP28 conference.
