Islamabad, 20 June 2021 (TDI): Prime Minister Imran Khan congratulated Iran’s new President Ibrahim Raisi on his “historic victory” in the country’s 13th presidential election. The Prime Minister wrote that he hoped to “cooperate with him to further strengthen brotherhood between both the countries and ensure peace and prosperity in the region. Iran’s Chief of presidential election Jamal Orff said in a statement on television that Raisi received 17.8 million votes, and the only moderate candidate in the campaign, Abdul Nasser Hemati, received 2.4 million votes won third place.
According to Orff’s figures, the turnout rate was 48%, the lowest presidential election in the history of the Islamic Republic, and Lacey won 62% of the vote. After most moderate and reformist candidates were disqualified, millions of voters stayed at home.
