Peru, OAS sign a joint declaration

Lima, 4 November 2021 (TDI): Peru Foreign Minister Oscar Maúrtua received Secretary-General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, on his official visit to Peru.  The Foreign Minister of Peru reaffirmed Peru’s commitment to the Inter-American Democratic Charter during his meeting.

Both parties signed a joint declaration and two new agreements to build the capacity of MSMEs. They also discussed the advancement of the inter-American agenda with multidimensional security that follows the mandates adopted by the General Assembly. The OAS Permanent Council also adopted those mandates.

They also talked about first, strengthening cooperation in a post-pandemic era. Secondly, they are working to advance the recognition of Rare Diseases and improvement on access to health treatment. Thirdly, Foreign Minister Maúrtua emphasized Peru’s commitment to work with the OAS for democracy, human rights, security, and development.

OAS and Peru Relationship

The OAS is a regional international organization that started with the signing in Bogota Colombia. It is the Charter of the OAS which impulse it, it entered into force in December 1951. It has 35 independent members states and Peru is one of them.

The organization consists of political, juridical, and social governmental forums in the  American Hemisphere. In addition to that, the OAS’s purposes are based on its main pillars: democracy, human rights, security, and development.

In the same way, the organization regroups many countries and cultures, it has four official languages which are, French, English, Portuguese and Spanish. This can be considered as a strength for them.

In Peru, the Organization of the American States established an office in 1954 and works to contribute to National development, following the purposes of democracy, human rights, security, and development that promote the organization.

To conclude, the visit of the Secretary-General of the OAS  to Peru is of the greatest relevance. Actually, Peru will be the next destination for the meeting of the General Assembly of the organization in 2022. So it can be seen as a visit of preparation for that big event.
