Pakistan’s PM Meets Maldives President on UNGA Sidelines

NEW YORK CITY (TDI): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with the Maldives in trade, tourism, education, investment, and climate change.

He made this commitment during a meeting with Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Both leaders emphasized the deep-rooted ties between Pakistan and the Maldives, agreeing on the importance of increasing people-to-people exchanges and collaborative efforts to promote economic growth and sustainable development in their countries.

They also acknowledged the shared responsibility of South Asian nations to work together for peace, prosperity, and stability in the region.

The premier took to media platform X to announce his extensive meeting with the Maldives President.

In his post, the Prime Minister expressed his delight in meeting President Muizzu and noted that they had wide-ranging discussions during their interaction at the UN General Assembly.

He reiterated the mutual responsibility of South Asian nations to collaborate for regional peace and prosperity.

Earlier on Tuesday, the premier urged developed nations to assist developing countries in escaping debt traps primarily exacerbated by climate change-related disasters.

Addressing the SDG Moment 2024 Meeting on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly Session, the prime minister highlighted the severe flooding that struck Pakistan in 2022, which he attributed to climate change.

“We faced the worst flooding in our history, and this was not our fault. We contribute barely a fraction of a percent to global carbon emissions,” he stated.
