Devastating Floods Hit Malaysia
More than 37,000 people have been displaced by severe flooding caused by torrential rains in six Malaysian states this week, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim informed parliament.
The affected states include Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Perlis, Johor, and Perak.
The worst-hit region is Kelantan, bordering Thailand, where 30,582 people from 9,223 families have been impacted.
A total of 322 temporary shelters have been established to accommodate flood victims, Anwar said.
Flooding during the monsoon season is an annual occurrence on the country’s eastern coast, typically displacing thousands between October and March.
A Facebook update by Malysia’s National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) highlighted ongoing rescue efforts in Kelantan, where personnel evacuated residents by boat and waded through knee-deep waters.
On Wednesday, the Meteorological Department issued a red alert for continuous heavy rainfall, signaling dangerous conditions in Kelantan, Pahang, and Terengganu.
The department forecasts the rain will persist until Friday.
Anwar has instructed NADMA to mobilize all federal and state resources to ensure the safety and well-being of flood victims throughout the monsoon season.
Efforts are ongoing to mitigate the damage as Malaysia braces for further challenges posed by the annual monsoon rains.
