Kuala Lumpur, 9 August 2022 (TDI): Amna Baloch, High Commissioner of Pakistan to Malaysia, called on Chief of Royal Malaysian Navy, Tan Sri Mohd Reza, on Monday. Both parties discussed strengthening bilateral defense cooperation between Malaysia and Pakistan.

The two states maintain their military-to-military and defense ties through Joint Committee on Defense Cooperation (JCDC), signed between Malaysia and Pakistan in 1997.
Recently, on August 4, 2022, the Pakistani High Commissioner also visited Royal Malaysian Naval Base at Lumut and welcomed the Pakistani Navy Ship ‘Taimur’.

Pak-Malaysia Relations
Pakistan and Malaysia’s diplomatic relations were established in 1957. They collaborate in many sectors, especially, in higher education. Thousands of Pakistani students are studying Master’s level and Ph.D. programs in Malaysia.
Apart from this, Malaysia has become one of the major contributors to human resource development for Pakistan.
Also, the states signed the Malaysia-Pakistan Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (MPCEPA) in 2007. It encompasses liberalization in trade in goods and services, investments as well as technical cooperation.

Previous Official Visits
In February 2020, Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, visited Kuala Lumpur and met Prime Minister Mahathir Muhammad. The Ministers reaffirmed Pakistan and Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening economic, strategic, and security relations.
Previously, the former Pakistani Prime Minister also visited Malaysia in 2018 at the invitation of the Malaysian Prime Minister. During the meeting, both leaders held in-depth discussions on bilateral, regional as well as international issues of mutual interests.
Moreover, they shared their desire to intensify bilateral cooperation, expand trade and provide opportunities for commerce and business in both countries
In March 2019, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Muhammad visited Pakistan and attended celebrations of Pakistan Day in Islamabad, as a guest of honor.
During his visit, Pakistan and Malaysia signed several MoUs worth US $900 million in various sectors including investment and telecommunication.
Further, the Malaysian Minister also laid the foundation stone for the first South Asian assembly plant of Proton, in Karachi.
