Foreign Minister of Pakistan meets US Senator

Washington DC, 29 September 2022 (TDI): During his official tour to the US, The Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari met the US Senator for Foreign Relations, James Risch.

During the meeting, both sides highlighted growing Pakistan and US Relations in recent times. Moreover, they also exchanged views on possible opportunities to tighten these bilateral relations.

Additionally, both sides also discussed issues in regional dynamics. They emphasized the need and importance of a stable Afghanistan for a developing region.

The Foreign Minister of Pakistan also encouraged the US Senator to visit Pakistan. The invitation came as a follow-up to the impacts of floods in Pakistan.

Discussion on Floods

Owing to heavy monsoon rains in Pakistan, many areas got submerged in water. More than 1500 people have died as a direct impact of these floods. Moreover, infrastructural damage, as well as economic problems caused by the floods, keeps on growing.

During the meeting, Foreign Minister Bilawal highlighted the destruction caused due to these unprecedented floods. The Foreign Minister stressed that these floods have affected 33 million people which is more than the population of Australia.

Furthermore, he also emphasized the growing vulnerability of the flood-stricken people to get water-borne diseases.

He said that Pakistan is a victim of climate change despite being minimally responsible for greenhouse emissions.

Additionally, he expressed the government’s hope of building the country back better and with greener climate resilient infrastructure.

However, Foreign Minister explained that to deal with the impacts of floods and build the system back, Pakistan needs support from the International community.

On the occasion, the Foreign Minister extended his gratitude to the US for providing the country with $66.1 million of assistance. He also expressed his gratitude to the US for always helping during critical times and hoped they would do the same this time too.

In response, Senator James affirmed his support for Pakistan to deal with the impacts of floods. He also extended his condolences to the people harmed due to the floods.
