Pakistan’s for Stronger UN Peacekeeping

New York, 11 September 2024 (TDI): Pakistan has called for a more effective approach to United Nations peacekeeping operations.

It highlighted the need to resolve the complex challenges increasing day by day that have come up due to terrorism, organized criminals, and external interventions.

 

In an open debate held in the Security Council on UN Peacekeeping operations,  marked ‘Strengthening UN Peacekeeping: Reflections for the future’ Ambassador Munir Akram Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, apprised a series of proposals.

Pakistan aims to foster the validity of the UN peacekeeping mission.

Ambassador Akram outlined that the assumptions from peacekeeping missions have flourished, despite the resource limitations.

Pakistan proposed its last-term steps on the Security Council to focus on multidimensional missions. That coped with these rising challenges.

 

“Security Council should assure full support to African Union which is prepared to carry out peacekeeping operations,” the Ambassador said.

He also welcomed the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2719, emphasizing the importance of its effectiveness.

 

Ambassador Akram mentioned that “We must ascertain ways to upgrade national and regional capacities for pre-emptive dispute preventions, cross-border interdiction, control over illegal exploitation of natural resources and fostering intra-state and inter-state cooperation”.

Pakistan’s Relations and Commitment

The Ambassador also expressed Pakistan’s dedication and commitment towards regions like the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Sudan, and others.

He pointed out that this commitment is part of a vast effort to address the issues of peacebuilding.

 

However, local peace initiatives at the community level can mitigate violence. Abyei is a vital example of maintaining peace arrangements that can lead to positive results.

He also explained effective political frameworks to boost peace agreements between conflicting parties.

 

He also addressed the need for increased cooperation among Security Council members, including permanent members to gain objectives.

Peace-building measures should be reinforced through the participation of the peacebuilding commission, UN development agencies, the Resident Coordination system, and international financial institutions.

Pakistan’s Efforts in UN Peacekeeping Missions

Pakistan is involved in long-standing UN peacekeeping. That has contributed 230,000 peacekeepers to 46 UN missions worldwide, with 181 Pakistani peacekeepers.

They sacrificed their lives for the development of global peace and security.

 

Pakistan actively participates in peacekeeping challenges and contributes to the upcoming Ministerial Preparatory Meeting in Islamabad.

Also, add its two-year tenure on the UN Security Council and Peace Building Commission.

 

Lastly, Pakistan continues to play its role in UN peacekeeping efforts. It remains focused on developing necessary reforms.

These operations are equipped to meet the demands of today’s global security environment.
