Chicago, 11 April 2022 (TDI): The Consul-General of Pakistan in Chicago, Tariq Karim, visited an art exhibition featuring the work of renowned Pakistani artist Amin Gulgee.
The South Asia Institute hosted the exhibition. The institute aims to foster and promote the art, culture, and literature of the South Asian region. The title of the show is “The Spider Speaketh in Tongues.”
In his remarks, the Consul-General hailed the rich artistic skills of Amin Gulgee. Moreover, he lauded Pakistani artists and painters for their extraordinary contribution to promoting national art and culture around the globe.
Amin Gulgee is a Karachi-based Pakistani artist and sculptor. He is the son of Ismail Gulgee, a renowned Pakistani artist.
He is best known worldwide for his abstract work inspired by Islamic calligraphy. Also, he has received the President’s Pride of Performance, one of Pakistan’s highest civilian honors.
Pakistani Art in the US
The Pakistani diaspora in the United States has carried and popularized Pakistani art in the country. Moreover, Pakistani art, such as the Pakistani truck art, has been popularized through art exhibitions throughout the globe. In addition, many notable Pakistani descent artists work and live in the United States.
Pakistani Diaspora in the Chicago
There are around five hundred thousand Pakistanis across the United States. A small but active community lives around Chicago as well. Pakistan’s Consulate-General in the city serves the needs of the Pakistani society.
Pakistanis live dispersed across Chicago’s suburbs. However, Pakistani presence has been most visible along Devon Avenue, the cultural and commercial center of Chicago’s South Asian communities.
Furthermore, Dozens of Pakistani restaurants and shops exist on North Side street, among other South Asian businesses. In addition, Pakistanis celebrate the independence day of Pakistan with an annual parade in the city.
A portion of Devon east of Western Avenue has been named “Mohammed Ali Jinnah Way,” in honor of Pakistan’s founder and the first head of state. Moreover, the Pakistanis in Chicago have established social and cultural institutions.
