Indonesia celebrates 77th Independence Day

Islamabad, 17 August 2022 (TDI): The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan extended its greetings to the Government and people of Indonesia on the occasion of Independence Day.

Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia

Indonesia is celebrating its 77th Independence Day today.  On August 17, 1945, the Indonesian Political leaders declared the country’s independence from the Dutch colonial rule. Since then, the day is celebrated on this date.

However, the Netherlands recognized Indonesia’s independence four years later.

Independence Day is officially termed “Hari Ulang Tahun Kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia.” The people of Indonesia celebrate the day with great enthusiasm.

Additionally, flag hoisting ceremonies, cultural and patriotic parades, and festivals are conducted across the country to mark the day.

Moreover, this year the people are celebrating Independence Day with the theme of “Recover Faster, Rise Stronger.”

Pakistan and Indonesia Relations

The two states established diplomatic relations in 1947, which are bound by shared historical ties. This year will mark the 75 years of their diplomatic ties. Formally, Pakistan and Indonesia’s relations started with the signing of the Treaty of Friendship in 1951.

Further, in 2021, the two countries committed to advance cooperation in various sectors including commerce, industry, science and technology, and the environment. Moreover, Indonesia is Pakistan’s one of the largest trading partners in ASEAN states.

In 2012, the two countries signed the Preferential Trade Agreement. Since its establishment, the trade relations between the two countries have significantly progressed.

Moreover, the Bilateral trade volume between the two states was 3.3 Billion US Dollars this year.

Apart from this, they maintain strong political relations. In 2018, Indonesian President Joko Widodo visited Pakistan. During his visit, several agreements and MOUs were signed between the states including the Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Recently, in July 2022, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif held a telephonic conversation with Indonesian President  Joko Widodo. The leaders agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation.
