Pakistan to India: Don’t Weaponize Water

Islamabad (TDI): Pakistan has warned India against weaponizing water, cautioning that such a move could have consequences lasting for generations, as New Delhi threatens to block the flow of Indus River waters amid rising tensions.

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry cautioned that any attempt by India to block Pakistan’s water supply would be considered crossing a red line.

Speaking in an interview with Arab News, he said that “it is some madman who can think that he can stop water of 240 million plus people of this country.”

“I hope that time never comes, but if it does, the world will witness such actions and the consequences will be felt for years, even decades. Nobody should dare stop water of Pakistan.”

The sharp statement comes in the wake of India’s unilateral suspension of the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty in April, following a deadly Pahalgam incident in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which New Delhi falsely blamed on Pakistan — an allegation Islamabad has categorically rejected.

Since then, the region has once again been edged toward the brink of war. In early May, India carried out cross-border attacks on Pakistan, claiming to target militant hideouts.

Pakistan hit back, hitting 26 Indian military sites before a US-brokered ceasefire helped to stop operations on May 10.

However, ceasefire has remained fragile. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement this week that New Delhi would cut off Indus waters supply to Pakistan has reignited fears of further escalation. Pakistan has declared that such action would be considered an act of war.

The DG ISPR said that Pakistan wants peace in the region, but with eyes wide open.

He stated that Pakistan’s armed forces are professional, fully committed to honoring the obligations they undertake, and strictly follow the government’s directives both in letter and spirit.

Regarding the ceasefire, he added that the military believes it can hold firmly, supported by ongoing confidence-building measures and communication between both countries.
