United Nations (TDI): Pakistan will begin its 2-year tenure as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on January 1, with Ambassador Munir Akram stating that the Pakistani delegation will play a “constructive and active” role in addressing major challenges facing the world.
“Pakistan’s presence will be felt in the Security Council,” Ambassador Akram, Pakistan’s top diplomat at the UN, said.
On Wednesday, Pakistan will begin its 2025-26 term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC, marking the 8th time the country has held a seat on the 15-member body, APP reported.

In June, Pakistan was elected to the Council with a huge majority as a Council’s non-permanent member, polling 182 votes in the 193-member General Assembly — far more than the required 124 votes representing a two-thirds majority.
“Pakistan joins the UNSC amid significant geopolitical turbulence, with competition between World’s two largest powers and ongoing wars in the Middle East, Europe, Africa and beyond and a sharply intensifying and multidimensional arms race,” Ambassador Akram said.
“As a responsible country — the 5th largest by population — Pakistan will play a constructive and active role, in accordance with the UN Charter, to halt wars, promote the pacific settlement of conflicts and contain the negative impacts of great power hostilities, the arms race, new weapons and domains of conflict as well as the spreading scourge of terrorism.
Pakistan to Address Threats to Regional Stability
He also emphasized that Pakistan must address both in the UNSC and other UN forums, the threats to regional peace and security, including cross-border terrorism, the denial of Kashmiri self-determination, the growing arms imbalance in South Asia, and the discriminatory measures against Pakistan that undermine its strategic deterrence capabilities.
“Luckily, Pakistan has a well-trained and professional team at the United Nations with the proven capacity to address these challenges effectively. Its presence will be felt in the UNSC, “Ambassador Akram added.
