Pakistan removes tariffs on Afghanistan fruits   

KABUL (TDI): Taliban officials have claimed that Pakistan has reduced the customs tariff on fresh fruits and vegetables from Afghanistan to zero.

Taliban officials, quoting the Pakistani Consul General and Commercial Attaché in Herat, informed local media that Pakistan has removed the customs tariffs on Afghan pomegranates, grapes, peaches, and tomatoes.

Also Taliban’s head for social media Shamsullah Samim posted on social media platform ‘X’ that Kausar Ali Zahid, Pakistan’s commercial attaché in Herat, shared this news during a meeting with Noor Ahmad Islamjar, the Taliban governor in Herat.

He said that Pakistan has eliminated tariffs on some of Afghanistan’s fresh fruit and vegetable exports.

While senior Taliban officials in Herat view the removal of customs tariffs on Afghanistan fruits and vegetables as a important step toward enhancing bilateral trade ties between the two countries.

Nevertheless, a month ago, viral videos on social media showed some Afghan truck drivers saying that many of the fruits in their trucks had spoiled due to delays at Pakistan’s border, causing substantial losses for traders in Afghanistan.

Media reports suggest that the recent closure of crossings by the Pakistani government has put financial burden on Afghanistan’s traders who are worried due to losses and their stranded goods particularly perishable items like fruits and vegetables.

The Afghan businesses are already in pressure due to ongoing political tensions.
