Pakistan Marks Benazir Bhutto’s 17th Death Anniversary

KARACHI, (TDI): The Sindh government has declared a public holiday today (Friday) to honor the 17th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

The main commemorative event is set to take place at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, the ancestral home of the Bhutto family.

Thousands are gathering there to pay tribute to the slain leader, who was assassinated on December 27, 2007, in a gun and suicide attack after addressing an election rally at Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi.

Preparations at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh are complete, with people arriving in caravans from across the country. Security has been tightened in the area, with police, special forces, and other personnel deployed to ensure safety.

A large marquee has been erected at the venue, featuring a 60-foot stage. Welcome camps have been set up to accommodate Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) supporters and Bhutto loyalists attending the event.

President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari are scheduled to address party workers and supporters during the ceremony.

Benazir Bhutto, the first female prime minister of Pakistan, was assassinated on December 27, 2007, in a tragic attack at Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi.

On December 19, the Sindh government announced a public holiday for December 27 to mark her death anniversary.

According to the official notification, all government offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils under the Sindh government’s control will remain closed.

In addition to the main gathering, the PPP is organizing multiple events across the country to commemorate Benazir Bhutto’s enduring legacy.
