Pakistan, 6 August 2024 (TDI): The Ministry of National Food Security has revealed that Pakistan imported 6.18 million metric tons of wheat over the past two years. According to a written response submitted to the Senate, the ministry stated that 2.60 million metric tons of wheat were imported in 2022-23, while 3.58 million metric tons were imported in 2023-24.
The response also mentioned that the carry-forward stock of wheat was 1.84 million metric tons in 2022 and 1.63 million metric tons in 2023-24. Additionally, the ministry provided information on the water requirements for various crops, stating that 114 billion cubic meters of water are needed annually for wheat, rice, cotton, and sugarcane crops.
The ministry also mentioned that these four major crops are cultivated on 14.21 million hectares of land, with 75% of the irrigated area dedicated to these crops.
In a separate response, the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination provided information on the membership of parliamentarians in the Gun and Country Club, stating that membership is considered private and not official. The ministry recommended that the management committee consider creating a separate category for parliamentarians.
