Pakistan expresses condolences on passing of Nafis Sadik

Islamabad, 17 August 2022 (TDI): Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed condolences on the passing of Dr. Nafis Sadik, former Executive Director of  United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The Foreign Minister of Pakistan, in a tweet, shared that Dr. Sadik was a distinguished Pakistani who made her mark as an outstanding civil servant. Further, he offered condolences to her family.

Moreover, the President of Pakistan, Arif Alvi paid tribute to Dr. Sadik for her remarkable services for maternity and child health care. He also called her an inspiration for women and expressed condolences for her family.

About Dr. Nafis Sadik

Dr. Nafis Sadik was a Pakistani civil servant as well as a Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General. She also served as a Special Envoy for HIV Aids in Asia and was a former Executive Director of UNFPA from 1987 to 2000.

Dr. Nafis Sadik emphasized the significance of attending to women’s issues. Moreover, she stressed including women in the formulation and implementation of policies.

According to a statement released by the spokesperson of UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres on Dr. Nafis’s death said, “When Dr. Sadik took up her post at UNFPA in 1987, she became the first woman to head one of the UN’s major voluntarily-funded programs.”

Moreover, Dr. Nafis Sadik received numerous awards and honors from around the world for her work in advancing the health of women and children in the global society.

Apart from this, she also served at the South Asian Commission on the Asian Challenge. She worked on the Board of Governors of the Foundation for Human Development. Also, from the years 1994 to 1997, Sadik served as President of the Society for International Development (SID).
