Pakistan determined to achieve SDGs regarding children

Islamabad, 22 February 2022 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Pakistan Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that Pakistan is committed to achieving UN SDGs regarding children.

He made these remarks in a meeting with the UNICEF Executive Director Catherine M. Russell. The meeting took place on February 21 in Islamabad.

UN SDGs and UNICEF

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are the targets defined by the UN that have to be achieved by 2030, ideally, globally. They are 17 in number and are interrelated as well.

Quality Education, Zero Hunger, etc are some examples of UN SDGs. UNICEF stands for United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. It is an organization aimed at providing aid to children across the globe.

Currently, the UNICEF’s Head is Catherine M.Russell. She is in Pakistan on her first visit after assuming office as Executive Director of UNICEF.

Rights of Children

Pakistan has passed laws for child protection, the Foreign Minister shared in the meeting. An independent National Commission exists for the protection of their rights.

Talking about education specifically it was shared that the Government is working to increase the enrollments in schools.

Situation of Afghanistan

Foreign Minister of Pakistan Shah Mahmood Qureshi additionally stressed averting the economic meltdown in Afghanistan. He accentuated that unfreezing the foreign assets of Afghanistan is significant.

He further shared the role Pakistan is playing to help Afghanistan in times of crisis. He shed light on the humanitarian corridor made solely for the purpose of providing relief assistance to the war-torn country.

Violation of Rights in IIOJK

Shah Mahmood Qureshi, during the talks also expressed his concerns over the violations in IIOJK. The worst violation of women and children’s rights is happening there, he added.

Coming towards the remarks of the UNICEF Executive Director, she expressed her appreciation for Pakistan’s efforts in acknowledging the rights of children. She lauded the work the country is doing to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

She assured of the continued support of the United Nations International Children Emergency Fund to Pakistan.
