Pakistan Commends Saudi Arabia for Role in Russia-Ukraine Talks

New York (TDI): Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, in an official statement during the UN Security Council meeting on humanitarian situation in Ukraine, applauded and commended the role of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in facilitating dialogue between Russia and Ukraine with the United States as a mediary.

Jeddah has been the official and agreed-upon venue for discussion between the Ukrainian officials and the US as well as the Russian officials and the US. The talks have so far culminated in a limited ceasefire agreement.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, said that Pakistan welcomes the agreement on limited ceasefire. However, he stressed on all parties to abide by the United Nations rules and conventions.

He said that the UN framework is clear about protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure during conflicts, and that the 3rd Geneva Convention applies to all parties regarding how to treat the Prisoners of War (POWs).

He remarked that Pakistan’s position on this conflict has been consistent and is still the same while it enjoys “friendly relations with both Russia and Ukraine.”

Ambassador Iftikhar said, “Pakistan is deeply concerned by this conflict that has caused immense human suffering and massive damage to infrastructure, economy and society. It has had vast consequences for the global economy, particularly for the developing countries.”

“The conflict in Ukraine, which has now entered its fourth year, has taken a heavy toll on the civilian population. This is highly regrettable. Every human life matters,” he noted with regret and disappointment.

Pakistan’s statement also praised the leadership of the United States in bringing about this limited ceasefire by staying in touch with both Russia and Ukraine.

Finally, Ambassador Asim expressed hope that the ceasefire remains effective.

“We remain optimistic that this new dynamic and the momentum generated by these initial steps would eventually lead to a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire. We hope that the parties would earnestly abide by their commitments.”
