Pakistan Urges Safe Return and Justice for Rohingya Muslims, at UNGA

New York (TDI): Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, delivered a statement on Tuesday at the High-Level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities.

He called for a collective, compassionate, and durable response to one of the world’s most protracted humanitarian crises.

Aligning Pakistan’s position with that of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), as delivered by the representative of Turkiye, Ambassador Ahmad stressed the urgent need to address the deepening crisis in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

“For too long, the Rohingya have endured displacement and limited access to rights and services,” Ambassador Ahmad said.

“The recent upsurge of violence in Rakhine State has further intensified their suffering, forcing many to flee, and worsening an already dire humanitarian situation,” he added.

He praised countries like Bangladesh for their generosity in sheltering displaced Rohingyas, drawing parallels with Pakistan’s own experience of hosting millions of refugees over the past decades.

“We empathize and share their burden,” he added, acknowledging the immense strain such responsibility places on developing host countries.

Ambassador Ahmad emphasized the need for a balanced and pragmatic approach that respects Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while pursuing solutions rooted in compassion, dialogue, and shared responsibility.

A central focus of his address was the call for the full implementation of the recommendations of the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State, particularly those related to granting citizenship to the Rohingya.

“A holistic and inclusive approach, owned by Myanmar and supported by ASEAN, is vital for durable peace and reconciliation,” he said. “This would help create the conditions necessary for the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities.”

Pakistan reaffirmed its readiness to work with all relevant partners, including the United Nations, ASEAN, and the OIC, to meet the humanitarian needs on ground and to support long-term stability and reconciliation in Myanmar.

The statement comes amid mounting international concern over renewed hostilities in Rakhine State and the continued statelessness of the Rohingya, who remain among the world’s most persecuted communities.
