Where Taste Meets Diplomacy: Pakistan Hosts Mango Festival

Islamabad (TDI): The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan brought together members of the diplomatic corps and their families, on Thursday, in a vibrant Mango Festival, celebrating Pakistan’s delicious mangoes while promoting cultural exchange and soft diplomacy.

The festival was held at the Serena Hotel and guests enjoyed a diverse display of mango varieties as well as mango-inspired treats from all across Pakistan. The evening blended into a flavorful tribute to the country’s rich mango produce.

Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, the chief guest, praised the mango as more than just a fruit, calling it a symbol of friendship, goodwill, and national pride. “Pakistan’s mangoes are among the finest in the world. Through this festival, we aim to share a cherished part of our culture with our friends in the diplomatic community,” he said.

He also noted that while Pakistan ranks among the top global producers of mangoes, much of the sector’s potential remains untapped. Citing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision of “mango diplomacy,” Jam Kamal emphasized how such cultural events can help boost international engagement and showcase a positive image of Pakistan.

Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch echoed similar sentiments, describing the mango as the “king of fruits” and a central part of Pakistan’s identity. “Pakistan is the fifth-largest producer of mangoes globally. This festival celebrates that legacy while also reflecting our efforts to strengthen the agriculture sector and export value-added products,” she said.

She also acknowledged the government’s ongoing work to empower farmers and exporters through modernization and increased global competitiveness. The festival, she said, is a soft yet strategic example of how food and culture can play a role in foreign policy.

The guests sample tasted a rich assortment of mangoes including Sindhri, Chaunsa, Anwar Ratol, and Langra, alongside mango-based desserts and drinks, and were amused by the taste and flavor of Pakistan’s summer fruit.

Pakistani mangoes are exported to around seventy nine countries across the world. Of the annual production, around 6-7% mangoes are exported, majority of which land in the Gulf countries.
