Pakistan’s General Shamshad Mirza Visits Uzbekistan, Defense & Security Ties in Focus

Tashkent (TDI): Pakistan’s Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, undertook an official visit to Uzbekistan, where he met Uzbek President, Minister of Defense, and Secretary National Security Council.

The focus of these engagements was bilateral defense and security cooperation, in the context of current regional and global geopolitical realities. The two sides were on the same page in wanting to expand cooperation in defense and security, as well as road and rail connectivity.

General Mirza underlined the historical and fraternal nature of Pakistan–Uzbekistan relations, and a shared vision for advancing regional peace, stability, and prosperity.

In response, Uzbekistan’s political and defense leadership praised the professionalism of Pakistan’s armed forces, acknowledging their sacrifices in counterterrorism.

This visit builds upon a series of recent collaborations between the two countries. Earlier in 2025, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Tashkent, where he and President Mirziyoyev signed multiple memoranda of understanding (MoUs), ranging from trade, connectivity, technology, youth affairs, to media cooperation.

A high‑level Strategic Council was also established to regularly monitor progress and to implement MoUs and agreements.

Another major project where Pakistan and Uzbekistan are currently working closely is the Uzbekistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan railway project, which is a trilateral initiative aimed at creating a 573km rail link from Tashkent to Peshawar via Kabul.

The rail link, once complete and functional, will make regional trade and logistics very efficient. All three countries agreed upon a joint feasibility study, on July 17, 2025.

In this context, Gen. Mirza’s visit can also be seen as a discussion on security checks and guarantees surrounding the rail link, because security remains a central concern.
