PTI Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Arrested in GHQ Attack Case

ISLAMABAD, (TDI): Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub Khan, was among several PTI leaders arrested following their indictment in the GHQ attack case, ARY News reported on Thursday.

An anti-terrorism court, led by Judge Amjad Ali Shah, indicted Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), along with 60 other party leaders in connection with the attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ).

Following the court’s verdict, police arrested four PTI leaders, including Omar Ayub, Raja Basharat, Malik Ahmad Chatta, and Azeem, in relation to the case.

Additionally, at least 23 other accused, including Murad Saeed, Shehbaz Gill, and Zulfi Bukhari, have been declared proclaimed offenders.

The charges stem from the events of May 9, when thousands of Khan’s supporters took to the streets to protest his arrest on graft allegations.

The protests turned violent, with demonstrators attacking military buildings and other government properties.

At least eight people were killed in the unrest, which resulted in significant property damage and widespread chaos.

The violence prompted a nationwide crackdown, with more than 4,000 of Khan’s supporters detained.

Human Rights Watch reported that the arrests were part of an extensive effort by the authorities to quell the unrest.

In another development, an Islamabad anti-terrorism court earlier sentenced 10 individuals to prison terms of up to six years for their involvement in the May 9 riots.

The verdict marked the first legal action related to the protests.

The convicted individuals included four Afghan nationals, as well as Pakistanis from Islamabad, Bajaur, and Rawalpindi.
