OIC Calls Emergency Meeting Over Middle East Situation

Jeddah, 4 August 2024 (TDI): The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has called an emergency meeting of its Executive Committee at the level of foreign ministers on August 7 in Jeddah.

The meeting is scheduled at the request of Palestine and Iran after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the chief of Hamas Political Bureau, in Tehran, the OIC said in an official statement on Saturday.

“The meeting will address the recent situation in the Gaza Strip and the broader Middle East peace process following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran,” it added.

The agenda for the meeting includes discussions on “the latest situation in the Gaza Strip, the consequences of Haniyeh’s assassination, and Israel’s aggression against the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

The OIC Secretary-General will chair the meeting, featuring closed-door sessions with foreign ministers from member states, including Palestine, Iran, and Pakistan.

A joint communiqué will likely be issued after the meeting, outlining the OIC’s stance on the situation.

Haniyeh Killed by Short-Range Projectile

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have claimed that Israel assassinated Ismail Haniyeh using a “short-range projectile” launched from outside of his accommodation in Tehran.

The Guards said in a statement that this terrorist operation was carried out by firing a short-range projectile with a warhead of about seven kilograms — causing a powerful explosion — from outside the accommodation area.

Haniyeh was killed early Wednesday in Tehran where he was attending the swearing-in of the new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.

The Guards repeated their insistence that Haniyeh would be avenged. “Israel would receive a severe punishment at the appropriate time, place, and manner.”
