Beijing, 4 January 2022 (TDI): The Five Nuclear weapons states remained committed towards the avoidance of the War and Arms race.
The countries include NPT members such as the US, Russia, China, the UK, and France. They have pledged to avoid chances of Nuclear War.
The five-member states are the signatories of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty in 1968. The group is also known as N5 or P5 as they are the permanent members of the UNSC.
The statement came at the moment in International politics when the situation is rapidly evolving. Top nuclear leadership stressed that it is impossible to win and fight a nuclear war.
They agreed on the fact that nuclear war would have far-reaching consequences across the world. States must utilize such weapons to defend and deter aggression, the statement added.
Hoping for the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear weapons, the group believed that there will be no spread of such destructive weapons. N5 also reaffirmed its commitments to Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) obligation.
Article VI of NPT
Article VI of NPT forces the signatory countries to undergo negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to withdrawal of the nuclear arms race at an early date and nuclear disarmament.
The countries also intend to prevail and strengthen the measures on account of preventing unauthorized or unintended use of nuclear weapons.
They also reiterated that the Nuclear weapons they hold will not target each other or any other State. Moreover, the Permanent Members of Security Council also underlined their intentions to work closely with other states. It will create a secure environment and be more conducive to progress on disarmament.
NPT members also wished to avoid military confrontations through bilateral and multilateral diplomatic approaches. They are constructing a dialogue with mutual respect and understanding through acknowledging each other’s security interests and concerns.
