Glasgow, 3 November 2021 (TDI): New Zealand’s Minister of Climate Change James Shaw announced today that his country has joined hands with other countries to launch the Global Methane Pledge.

105 countries over the world launched the initiative to tackle the Methane emission on COP26 at Glasgow.

By limiting the Methane pledge, it is optimized to reduce 0.2 degrees Celsius of warming by 2050.

Countries that launched the initiative commit to reducing the 30% margin from the 2020 level by 2030.

James Shaw noted that the initiative is Newzealand’s commitment to cut net greenhouse emissions by 50 percent by 2030. New Zealand is happy to join the initiative he added.

The Minister also reaffirmed his country’s approach to cutting the gas from fossil fuels and meeting the biogenic methane targets set out in the Zero Carbon Act.

Earlier, New Zealand passed the ‘Zero Carbon Act’ last year to reduce the carbon emissions in the climate.

The South Pacific country aims to reduce 10% methane from the 2017 level by 2030. They also aim to reduce it by 47 % by 2050.

New Zealand will also publish ‘The Emissions Reduction Plan’ next year. The plan will set out the actions to meet the targets.

Prior to that, New Zealand also committed to sufficiently contribute to the Global effort to tackle Climate change.
