Kabul (TDI): On July 20, the inauguration ceremony for a new carpet making training center took place in Afghanistan’s capital. The Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Afghanistan, Ilham Mammadov, also took part as the center has been set up with Azerbaijan’s support.Â
In an official press release, the center has been called “Carpet Weaving Training Center for the Development of Traditional Afghan Crafts.” An initial agreement was signed between the OIC Mission in Afghanistan and the Embassy of Azerbaijan, back in April.Â
The project, which aims to increase employment and preserve traditional Afghan crafts, has been implemented with the financial support of the Azerbaijan International Development Assistance Agency (AIDA), in partnership with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s Representative Office, and the Ministry of Labor and Social Security of Afghanistan.
Speaking at the inauguration, Afghanistan’s Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Security, Alhaj Mavlavi, thanked Azerbaijan and the OIC on behalf of his country, and emphasized that the center will serve to protect, promote, and develop Afghan handicrafts.Â

Ambassador Mohammad Saeed al-Ayyash, the OIC representative in Afghanistan, noted that the vocational school established with the support of the Azerbaijani side will support low-income Afghan families, and that the project makes a special contribution to solidarity among OIC member countries.
Ambassador I. Mammadov noted that our country has already implemented several projects in Afghanistan and said that it plans to continue such initiatives.
Speaking about the friendly relations between Azerbaijan and Afghanistan, as well as the importance of solidarity within the OIC, the speakers noted that Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the OIC Summit of Heads of State and Government in 2026 is of particular importance.
The training center consists of four workshops and is equipped with 20 carpet weaving looms, necessary tools, and a year’s supply of raw materials. The center is expected to train 80 women at a time.
