Netherlands Statement to Disarmament Committee

New York, 8 October 2021(TDI): Brandt outlined his country’s commitments in a statement to the chair of the committee. She stated that global security is evolving due to rapid changes in technology and its application to modern weapons. This statement emphasized the world is increasingly becoming multi-polar and the far-reaching effects of the pandemic have exacerbated global security challenges.

Yoka Brandt is the permanent representative of the Kingdom of Netherlands to the United Nations (UN) in New York. She outlined her country’s commitments and aims in the UN First Committee (Disarmament and Security) of the 76th session of the General Assembly. The Netherlands holds the office of the Vice President of the Review Conference, and of the Chair of Main Committee III on Peaceful Uses.

Dutch representative stated that the Netherlands remains firmly committed to the Treaty of Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. As such, she called upon Iran to halt its nuclear program and reverse the developments it has made in the previous years. The chair also called upon Iran to follow the agreed principles of JCPOA. Furthermore, she invited Iran to resume the negotiations regarding its nuclear program.

The chair also expressed concern for the nuclear weapons of the Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea (North Korea). Her remarks categorically stated that a nuclear North Korea is simply unacceptable. She called upon the international community to support efforts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

The Netherlands has observed a growth in the use of chemical weapons in the last few years. The chair of the committee expressed her regret over the timid reaction of the international community over the usage of these deadly weapons. She called upon all member states to support the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to strictly discourage the use of nuclear weapons.

The Dutch representative also stated that the Netherlands is aware of the possible confrontation of states in outer space. Therefore any installation of weapons in outer space will threaten the security of all states. There she called upon the international community to play their role in reaching an agreement in this regard.

In conclusion, she stated that the Netherlands staunchly believes in the multilateral approach to reach solutions to these problems.
