Dutch foreign minister Wopke Hoekstra, along with Ukrainian ambassador to the Netherlands, Oleksandr Karasevych, raise Ukraine flag on the occassion of Ukraine's independence day

The Hague, 24 August 2023 (TDI): As Ukraine celebrates its Independence Day on August 24, the Netherlands stands firmly beside the nation, acknowledging its unwavering determination in the face of Russian aggression.

In a demonstration of support, Minister of Foreign Affairs Wopke Hoekstra and Ukrainian Ambassador Oleksandr Karasevych jointly raised the Ukrainian flag in The Hague, marking the occasion and reaffirming the Netherlands’ solidarity.

Since the events of 2014, including the annexation of Crimea, and the subsequent large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the country has been resolutely defending itself against Russian aggression.

This year’s Independence Day holds particular significance as Ukraine perseveres in safeguarding its sovereignty and the broader stability of Europe.

The gesture of hoisting the Ukrainian flag resonates deeply with the historic events that led to Ukraine’s independence.

On August 24, 1991, the Ukrainian parliament officially declared its separation from the Soviet Union.

Later that year, in a resounding display of unity, over 90% of Ukrainians voted in favor of independence and separation from Russia.

Since then, August 24 has been celebrated annually as Independence Day.

Minister Hoekstra’s participation in the flag-raising ceremony underscores the Netherlands’ commitment to supporting Ukraine during these challenging times.

In the ongoing battle against Russian aggression, Ukraine’s struggle transcends its own borders, encompassing the defense of freedom and security for all of Europe.

Ukraine’s 32nd Independence Day witnessed a remarkable gesture of solidarity as the provincial flags adorning The Hague’s Hofvijver lake were temporarily replaced by the Ukrainian flag.

The flag-raising ceremony was accompanied by the notes of the Ukrainian national anthem, echoing in numerous European cities.

The event was attended not only by Ambassador Oleksandr Karasevych but also by ambassadors from various countries and Mayor Jan van Zanen of The Hague.

The presence of Ukrainians residing in the Netherlands due to the ongoing conflict further underlined the shared connection between the two nations.
