New York, 7 September 2022 (TDI): The Counsellor of Nepal to the United Nations, Indira Gohiwar Aryal, gave a statement in the UN General Assembly session at the High-Level Forum on Culture of Peace on September 6.

The Counsellor said that massive efforts are required to build a culture of peace through the promotion of understanding, the coexistence of political & cultural diversity, inclusivity & rule of law. According to her, peace is a prerequisite for the attainment of SDGs.

Nepal at the United Nations

Nepal became a member of the United Nations on 14 December 1955. In 1956, Rishikesh Shaha was appointed as the first Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations.

Currently, Amrit Bahadur Rai is serving as the Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations. Prime Minister of Nepal, K.P. Sharma Oli, led the Nepali delegation to the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly held virtually in 2020.

In 1969-70 and 1988-1989, Nepal served in the United Nations Security Council as an elected non-permanent member. Nepal is serving as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

Culture of Peace

The theme of the eleventh UNGA high-level forum on the Culture of Peace was “Importance of justice, equality & inclusion for advancing peacebuilding.” The session was convened by the President of the 76th General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid and the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations co-organized the session.

The President gave his opening remarks. He said that “It is my pleasure to address all of you on this most important theme of fostering a culture of peace. I hope to contribute to an enriching conversation on how we can apply the sentiments and principles of a culture of peace in today’s world.”

He thanked the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh for its support in co-organizing this meeting.
