New Delhi, 15 August 2024 (TDI): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again pushed for the country’s religion-based laws to be replaced with a unified civil code.
Prime Minister Modi stated that a secular civil code is necessary for maintaining national unity during his speech at the Red Fort Independence Day celebration in New Delhi, while he also admitted that some minority groups have opposed the proposal.
In his statement, Prime Minister Modi called for a thorough debate on the subject, emphasizing how the current system, which uses various religion-based laws to regulate private issues like marriage, divorce, adoption, and inheritance, encourages inequality and divisiveness.
The nation should come together under a single legal system, he said, branding the current civil code as “communal.”
One of the main objectives of Indian PM’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in their election manifestos has long been the establishment of a standard civil code.
Yet, given the BJP’s recent loss of its parliamentary majority, PM Modi refrained from outlining any precise legislative measures.
For any possible implementation of this controversial policy, the administration currently depends on the support of its regional partners.

Furthermore, the Indian Premier touched on other important topics throughout his speech, which lasted over a full hour. These included the necessity of holding national and state elections at the same time as well as the government’s continuous efforts to modernize and reform the nation’s infrastructure.
