Ministers of Belize at Protocolary Session of OAS

Washington DC, 27 September 2022 (TDI): The Prime Minister of Belize, John Briceno, and Foreign Minister of Belize, Eamon Courtenay met with, the Chair of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States, Lou Anne Gaylene, and Secretary General of the (OAS), Luis Almagro.

The Ministers met during the protocolary meeting of the permanent council of the Organization of American States held in Washington.

Remarks by Prime Minister of Belize 

During the meeting, a number of important topics were discussed by John Briceno. The address by Prime Minister Briceno included climate financing, and collaboration towards achieving the goals and initiatives of COP15 and COP26.

Moreover, it also included migration issues and the case of Belize and Guatemala in the International Court of Justice.

In addition, a cooperation agreement was also signed between OAS and Pathlight Belize, a non-governmental organization. Pathlight Belize works for the purpose of empowering children through the provision of quality education. OAS through this cooperation agreement would impart inclusive and digital training to the Belizean teachers.

The Secretary General of OAS, Luis Almagro, remarked on the signing of the cooperation agreement between OAS and Pathlight Belize as an essential event while recognizing Pathlight Belize’s efforts in providing quality free education.

Organization of American States (OAS) and Belize

The organization of the American States is a multilateral regional body that brings together nations across America in order to address the present issues or opportunities.

The main objective of this organization is to build cooperation among the member states for the social and economic development of the western hemisphere. Moreover, the focus on human security and regional peace is an important agenda of the body.

Belize became a member of the organization in 1991. Since then, both have worked together in close cooperation strengthening the democratic process and institutions in the country.
