Tokyo, 20 July 2022 (TDI): The Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida met with the Prime Minister of Ireland, Micheál Martin. The Prime Minister’s Office hosted summit meetings and other events.
The Prime Minister of Ireland is visiting Japan on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Ireland.
Both leaders discussed various issues and matters. They both agreed to further solidify the relations between Ireland and Japan in the coming years.
Prime Minister Kishida mentioned that they are looking forward to deepening the bilateral relations and cooperation.
Prime Minister Kishida mentioned that he remembers the time when he visited Ireland as Foreign Minister. It was the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
While his Irish counterpart conveyed his condolences on the death of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

He added that he was shocked and angry after knowing that the life of former Prime Minister Abe is taken in such a way. He also said that it was against the foundation of democracy that his life was taken in the middle of an election.
On July 20, 2022, Prime Minister Kishida held a summit meeting and other events with H.E. Mr. Micheál Martin, T.D., Taoiseach, Prime Minister of Ireland, at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Aside from that, during the meeting, Prime Minister Kishida said that the aggression by Russia was unacceptable. It disturbed the foundation of entire international security.
Also, it was threatening the security of Europe, the Indo-Pacific, and the Asian region. Both leaders also agreed to cooperate on challenges including Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and to make efforts to bring about a world without nuclear weapons.
After the meeting, the Prime Minister of Ireland also visited the site of the New Irish Embassy in Japan. The new Embassy will be located in the Ireland House.
The building will also include the offices for Tourism Ireland, Bord Bia, Enterprise Ireland, and the IDA. In addition, it will have an event and exhibition space as well as a space for the meetings of the Irish community in Japan.
