Male, 29 October 2021 (TDI): Maldivian President, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has departed for Glasgow. The President will attend the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26).
The President is accompanied on this trip by the Maldivian Minister of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology, Aminath Shauna. Along with the Maldivian Special Envoy for Climate Change, Sabra Ibrahim Noordeen.
COP26
UN brings together countries for global climate summits. COPs – which stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’. This year will be the 26th annual summit – giving it the name COP26. COP26 takes place in Glasgow. UK along with partnership of Italy hosts COP26.
President Solih will deliver the National Statement at the conference. Meanwhile, The President and delegation are also scheduled to participate in various high-level summits. afterward, There will also be bilateral meetings with other state leaders.
Significance of COP26 for Maldives
COP26 is a major event for the Maldives. It will provide an opportunity to address the nation’s sustainable development plans on the global stage. President Solih has always been a vocal advocate regarding the climate vulnerabilities faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The summit brings parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. However, more than 190 world leaders participate in the summit. Also, the government representatives, negotiators along citizens will also attend this summit.
