Malé, 19 July 2022 (TDI): The Ambassador of Morocco to the Republic of Maldives, Mohamed Maliki, met with the Foreign Secretary of the Republic of Maldives, Ahmed Latheef, for bilateral talks.

During the meeting, the ministers restated their commitment to further strengthening the bilateral partnership between the two countries.

As a result, the dignitaries highlighted several areas of cooperation. These include economic cooperation, people-to-people contact, and culture and heritage.

They also highlighted counter-terrorism and deradicalization, education, and climate change. The Ambassador of Morocco, Mohamed Maliki, is on a 3-day official visit to the Maldives.


Inauguration of the Consulate of Morocco in the Maldives

The Consulate of Morocco in the Maldives was officially inaugurated on July 18. Ahmed Latheef, Foreign Secretary of the Maldives, officially hosted the Moroccan flag at the Consulate.

In addition, the Ambassador of Morocco to the Maldives, Mohamed Maliki, and the Consul of Morocco in the Maldives, Ahmed Nashid, also attended the inauguration ceremony.

The Consulate is Morocco’s first consulate in the Maldives since the two countries established diplomatic relations.

In light of this, the governments of the two nations believe that this is an essential step toward strengthening bilateral ties in areas of mutual interest.

Moreover, Morocco and the Maldives formally established diplomatic ties on February 4, 1988. Both states have a long history of relations tracing back to the 12th century.
