Kuala Lumpur, 13 August 2022 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Malaysia, Sri Saifuddin Abdullah hosted the official visit of the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani from 11 to 12 August 2022.

Both the Foreign Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the close ties between Malaysia and Qatar.

This visit acts as a follow-up to the official visit of the Prime Minister to the State of Qatar, Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani in March 2022.

Now the visit will act as a lead-up exercise for Sheikh Tamim ibn Hamad Al Thani, Emir of Qatar visit to Malaysia in 2023.

Bilateral discussions between the officials of Malaysia and Qatar

Since the two countries’ ties were established, the Foreign Ministers of both states held a bilateral meeting to discuss several matters of shared interest.

Both sides highlighted events in Afghanistan and Ukraine, the nuclear issue, and the occupied Palestinian territories. In this way, they exchanged their views on regional and international issues of mutual interests.

Moreover, both states decided to enhance cooperation for pandemic response and mutual trade and investments for food security. Qatar is also committed to providing humanitarian support to Rohingya refugees in Malaysia.

Among West Asian nations, Qatar is Malaysia’s sixth-largest trading partner, export market, and import source. The value of trade between Malaysia and Qatar in 2021 was USD634.2 million.

The Foreign Minister of Qatar also met with the Malaysian King Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. Both sides wished good health, happiness, progress, and prosperity for the government and people of Malaysia and Qatar.

Moreover, during the meeting, both reviewed bilateral cooperation and decided to strengthen support for each other.

They also talked about Qatar’s efforts in the field of mediation and its role in the signing of the Doha Peace Agreement in Chad. The meeting also dealt with the State of Qatar’s preparations to hold the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
