Lithuanian Official represents Nordic-Baltic States

New York, 18 October 2021 (TDI): Lithuania addressed the UN General Assembly Third Committee on behalf of Nordic and Baltic States. During the address, Lithuania expressed its gratitude to the UN Special Rapporteur on the freedom of expression and opinion.

The Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN Rytis Paulauskas had the honor of addressing the UN General Assembly on behalf of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Norway, Sweden, and Lithuania.

During his address, Permanent Representative Paulauskas expressed his gratitude to the UN Special Rapporteur Irene Khan for her efforts on freedom of expression. He particularly mentioned Khan’s report on challenges for women in exercising their rights of freedom and expression.

While praising Khan’s report in high remarks, he highlighted that freedom of expression is vital for peace, democracy and, global sustainable development. He also underlined the threats to freedom of expression faced by journalists and mass media globally.

Concluding his remarks, Paulauskas underscored the vitality of freedom of expression and media freedom globally. He also called on the international community that to become united and increase efforts to protect freedom of expression and ensure a secure environment for journalists.
