Lavrov, Wang Discuss Ukraine, Iran Wars During Talks in Baku

Baku (TDI): Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi have discussed the wars in Ukraine and Iran, bilateral relations and ties with the United States during talks on the sidelines of the seventh summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku.

According to a statement issued by Russia’s Foreign Ministry late Wednesday, the two ministers reviewed the development of Russian-Chinese relations and coordinated their positions on bilateral political dialogue and cooperation in international forums.

The meeting comes as Moscow and Beijing mark the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Sino-Russian Treaty of Friendship, a key framework underpinning their bilateral relationship.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said both sides expressed a positive assessment of the progress in bilateral ties and discussed ways to maintain political coordination amid ongoing international conflicts and shifting geopolitical dynamics.

The two foreign ministers also exchanged views on cooperation within the CICA framework and discussed the future development of the regional forum.

According to the Russian statement, both sides underscored the importance of strengthening coordination on international platforms, reflecting their continued emphasis on diplomatic engagement and cooperation on issues of shared interest.

The statement described the talks as taking place in an atmosphere of trust and constructive cooperation, which it characterized as a feature of Russian-Chinese relations.

Russia and China have expanded diplomatic and economic engagement in recent years, while frequently calling for a greater role for multilateral institutions in addressing international disputes. Their relationship has also drawn attention as both countries navigate their respective dealings with Washington and respond to conflicts affecting regional and global security.

However, the Russian statement did not provide detailed accounts of the positions expressed by Lavrov and Wang on the Ukraine and Iran wars or indicate whether the discussions produced specific agreements on either conflict.

The situation surrounding the wars in Ukraine and Iran featured alongside discussions on relations with the United States, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The inclusion of both conflicts highlights the range of security challenges confronting major powers and the importance of diplomatic consultations between Moscow and Beijing. Their discussions took place against a broader backdrop of international concern over military escalation, regional stability and the implications of conflicts for global security.

The ministry’s statement did not outline any joint initiative or new policy commitment emerging from the meeting. Further details on the two countries’ respective positions would be needed to establish whether the talks could lead to coordinated diplomatic action.
