Wellington, 11 August 2022 (TDI): The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, Nanaia Mahuta met on August 11.

This was a continuation of Edgars Rinkēvičs’ visit to New Zealand. He also met Minister for Pacific Peoples and Minister for Courts, Aupito William Sio.
The successful cooperation that has existed between Latvia and New Zealand since the two nations’ diplomatic ties were established in 1991 was acknowledged by their foreign ministers.
Rinkēvičs’ Remarks
The two Ministers expressed optimism that the trip will foster political and economic dialog. Edgars Rinkēvičs praised New Zealand for its robust position and the sanctions it has so far imposed upon the aggressor state.
Rinkēvičs also noted that the opening of the Latvian Embassy in Canberra will bring a significant contribution and ensure greater opportunities for Latvia’s presence in the Indo-Pacific.
Latvian Foreign Minister also said that his country has always placed high importance on working with New Zealand as a partner in regional and global formats.
Furthermore, according to Rinkēvičs, Latvia and New Zealand always remained united by a shared appreciation of democracy, human rights, multilateralism, and the rule-based international system that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has put in jeopardy.
Rinkēvičs praised New Zealand for its robust position and the sanctions it has so far imposed upon the aggressor state. He urged New Zealand to continue its commitment in support of Ukraine and to ensure that Russia is held accountable for its crimes.
Minister Rinkēvičs emphasized the importance of combating the false information that Russia spreads throughout the world. The officials agreed that cooperation between democracies is necessary for the current geopolitical environment.
