Khunjerab Pass Boosts Pak-China Trade with Year-Round Operations

Islamabad (TDI): The year-round opening of Khunjerab Pass has strongly boosted the cross-border trade between Pakistan and China.

Since the beginning of the year, the pass has facilitated the movement of 1,271 vehicles, transporting 12,432 tons of goods valued at over $95.26 million.

This strategic move has substantially increased cross-border trade and strengthened economic ties between the two nations.

Since the reopening of passenger customs clearance on April 1, 2024, the Khunjerab Pass has seen significant increases in both traffic and trade activity.

By the end of October 2024, the border crossing recorded over 50,000 passengers and more than 11,000 vehicles crossing through, highlighting its growing importance as a key transit point.

The port also processed an impressive 40,900 tons of import and export cargo, reflecting a 42.6% year-on-year increase in vehicle traffic and a notable 72.7% rise in trade volume.

The decision to keep the Khunjerab Pass operational throughout the year was formalized during the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in 2023, where China and Pakistan agreed to enhance infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted trade.

This initiative aligns with the objectives of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), aiming to promote regional connectivity and economic integration.

The Khunjerab Pass, located at an altitude of about 5,000 meters, is an important trade and cultural gateway that connects Northwest China with South Asia. Through this pass, China mainly imports textiles, agricultural products, and everyday goods, while it exports medicinal plants and herbs to Pakistan.

The extension of the operational period is expected to significantly increase trade volumes, promoting economic growth and cultural exchange between the two countries.

As trade volumes increase, both governments are committed to enhancing infrastructure and simplifying customs processes to make cross-border trade, particularly CPEC, more efficient.
