Karachi Protest Honors Detained Madleen Activists

Karachi (TDI): Civil society members gathered in large numbers at Teen Talwar, Karachi, on Wednesday to protest the Israeli detention of activists aboard the Gaza-bound aid ship Madleen and to condemn Israel’s ongoing deadly offensive in Gaza. The demonstration was marked by powerful speeches, passionate slogans, and a renewed call to global conscience.

The Madleen, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was intercepted by Israeli forces earlier this week as it attempted to deliver humanitarian aid—including baby powder and essential medical supplies—to the besieged population of Gaza. Among the detainees was renowned Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who, along with three others, accepted to be deported.

So far, over 55,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel resumed its assault on Gaza following the end of a fragile ceasefire in March. Against this backdrop, protestors chanted “Free Palestine” and sang revolutionary anthems like “Aisay dastoor ko mai nahi maanta” and “Woh subha kab aayegi,” symbolizing both mourning and hope.

Veteran activist Sheema Kirmani criticized the inaction by governments around the world, drawing a parallel with the bravery of the young activists aboard the aid ship. Environmental activist Zulfiqar Bhutto Jr. echoed similar frustration: “The Palestinian issue is not just for Muslims, but for everyone.”

Another civil society member pointed out the global double standards: “The West has plenty to say about the perils of Afghan women, but they stay silent at the plight of women in Gaza.” Activists also read out the names and nationalities of those aboard the Madleen, honoring their boldness and resolve.

As the protest came to a close, Bhutto Jr. raised a defiant slogan: “Palestine has always been here, and it will never cease to exist.”

Since Israel’s assault on Gaza in October 2023, various protests have been organized by civil society in major cities of Pakistan. Civil society, as well as people at large, have expressed their anger and frustration online.

Meanwhile street protests served the purpose of sending a message of solidarity to Palestinians. People in Pakistan express deep sorrow, hurt, and compassion for Palestinians who are being starved by Israel’s occupational tactics.
