US Vice President discusses "Internet for All" in South Carolina's visit

South Carolina, 28 February 2023 (TDI): Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris today visited South Carolina to discuss the historic $65 billion investment from the Biden-Harris Administration.

The investment is aimed to provide every household in America with access to affordable and reliable high-speed internet.

This investment is part of the Administration’s efforts to bridge the digital divide and expand opportunities for all Americans.

Furthermore, it will help to create an equitable future by ensuring everyone has access to the tools they need to succeed.

Significance of this investment

The Biden-Harris Administration’s investment of $65 billion is intended to help close the digital divide and expand access to high-speed internet in rural areas.

This includes expanding broadband infrastructure, subsidizing the cost of internet service for low-income households, and encouraging competition among broadband providers to increase speeds and reduce prices.

Additionally, this initiative also calls for providing training and resources to support digital inclusion in rural areas.

Vice President Harris has argued that providing access to the internet is a critical step in giving all Americans the tools they need to succeed.

More than 24 million American households still do not have access to high-speed internet either due to high costs of access or a lack of availability, especially in rural areas.

She believed that affordable and reliable internet access should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their location or economic status. To achieve this, she has advocated reducing the cost of internet access for low-income households.

Internet is a basic necessity in the 21st Century

After that, Vice President Harris also emphasized that internet access should be treated as a basic necessity, like food and water.

In her remarks, she argued that access to the internet is essential for students to succeed in school, for workers to compete in the global economy, and for people to connect with family and friends.

Likewise, Vice President Harris has also acknowledged the potential harms of internet access. Thus, she has proposed measures to improve online safety.

Such as providing more resources to combat cyberbullying and online predators, as well as cracking down on malicious actors who use the internet to spread hate and misinformation.

She has also promoted digital literacy to help people make informed decisions online. Vice President Harris has been a vocal advocate for digital inclusion, advocating for universal access to the internet so that everyone can benefit from its advantages.

Therefore, she has called for greater investment in digital infrastructure to ensure that internet speeds and reliability are improved across the country.
