Japan-Ukraine Summit Telephone Talk

Tokyo, 30 August 2023 (TDI): Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio conducted a telephone talk with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 29 August. This was the latest Japan-Ukraine Summit Telephone Talk since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war.

During the call, the Japanese Prime Minister assured the Ukrainian President that Japan has been supporting Ukraine since February 2022 and will continue to support Ukraine in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Prime Minister Kishida told the reporters after the phone call that President Zelenskyy expressed his appreciation to Japan for its efforts to support Ukraine in the war.

Prime Minister Kishida condemned Russia’s aggression and attacks on Ukraine and expressed his unwavering commitment to stand with Ukraine.

President Zelenskyy informed Prime Minister Kishida of Ukraine’s attempt to achieve peace in the region.

During the Japan-Ukraine Summit Telephone Talk, Prime Minister Kishida congratulated Ukraine on its Independence Day on 24 August.

Future Cooperation

Prime Minister Kishida highlighted Japan’s efforts to assist Ukraine, which Japan has been funding through the NATO Trust Fund.

Japan also underscored the significance of the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, where Japan showed its commitment to supply about a hundred vehicles, including small trucks and carriers from its Defense Forces as part of its support to Ukraine.

During the Japan-Ukraine Summit Telephone Talk, both leaders could only have a brief exchange of thoughts.

The Japan-Ukraine Summit Telephone Talk was held ahead of the G20 summit in New Delhi. At the summit, the Japanese Prime Minister will stress the significance of supporting Ukraine against Russia. Russia is expected to attend the Group of 20 summit next month.

The Japanese Prime Minister and the Ukrainian President strengthened their views and urged them to continue working together.

A conference on Ukraine’s reconstruction is also being arranged in Japan in the next year.
